FAQ

Why aren’t my emails going through reliably?

Sorry! We had several spikes in uploads from late June to August 2017. A lot of people tested Door Alert, causing the hourly and daily email limits to be exceeded. In response, our service provider made some changes without notifying us beforehand, which also adversely affected the reliability of this service. These things happen! Should be fixed now.

Can I send text messages to mobile devices?

Yes! Search Google for “email to SMS gateway”. Basically, a mobile carrier provides an email address using the recipient’s mobile number. This email address will let you send an email and have it come up as a text message on the recipient’s mobile device. Once you know the recipient’s mobile carrier and the mobile number, the rest is easy!

Can I use an old phone without a SIM card?

Yes, the audible alarm doesn’t require a cellular account, and if you connect to a local Wi-Fi, you can send silent alerts.

Why are there limits to how many emails that can be sent?

The short answer is that we have to pay for them! The longer answer is that our web hosting provider enforces hourly and daily limits, and our SMTP relay service provider requires us to ensure that we limit how many emails are sent at any one time.

The following describes our use of your data. By downloading, installing, or running the App, you confirm that you understand and consent to this policy.

Personal information and email addresses

• The App requires no registration to use its full functionality.
• In addition to audible alarms, the App provides silent alarm capabilities by sending alerts as email messages to recipients.
• When a silent alert is sent, the name of your device, under Settings > General > About > Name, is used in the title of the email.
• We do not enforce any requirements on the name of your device. It is sent as‑is, even if blank.
• We do not enforce any requirements on the email addresses you provide.
• The name of your device and email addresses are sent with a timestamp and validation code through a secure HTTPS connection to our remote server.
• For security reasons, the server saves the timestamp and validation code in a database.
• For accounting reasons, the server saves a count of the emails addresses requested to be sent and a count of the actual emails sent.
• Emails are sent individually, so that no other email addresses are visible to the recipient, only the recipient’s.
• The server does not archive the email addresses in any way. Once the emails are sent, the email addresses are gone and cannot be recovered.
• Third parties, including the recipient’s POP, IMAP, or SMS gateway servers, may be used to deliver the emails to the recipient.
• These third parties may have different policies than we do with respect to handling email addresses.
• We have no control of, and we do not endorse or condone, the email address handling policies of these third parties.

Remote server

• The App makes use of our remote server to manage sending email messages to recipients.
• The server is in a secure location and protected by multiple levels of security.
• The name of your device and email addresses are sent with a timestamp and validation code through a secure HTTPS connection to the server.
• For security reasons, the server saves the timestamp and validation code in a database.
• For accounting reasons, the server also saves a count of the emails addresses requested to be sent and a count of the actual emails sent.
• The storage of this information is protected by additional levels of security.

Backups

• Any settings of the App, including email addresses, are saved on your device, so they can be restored when the App is opened. This is done as a matter of convenience, since it can be difficult to correctly enter email addresses.
• Anyone with access to your device can view these settings, including email addresses, by opening the App.
• If you choose to backup your device, these settings can be saved to another computer or in the Cloud.
• We are not responsible for ensuring the security of these backups at any time.

Web site

• We provide a web site with web pages for marketing and support functions.
• The web pages we developed on this web site are in plain XHTML.
• No cookies are generated or saved on these web pages.
• The web site requires no registration to use its full functionality.
• We may link to, or embed content of, third parties such as Google, YouTube, and Facebook.
• We may have little or no control of the privacy and information sharing policies of these third parties, even for content generated by us.
• By using these third parties, we are not endorsing or condoning their privacy and information sharing policies.

The following describes the terms of use. By downloading, installing, or running the App, you confirm that you understand and consent to these terms.

Intended use of the App

• The App is intended to be a temporary security solution or to augment an existing security solution. Some examples, not exhaustive, of intended situations are when:
  • traveling and you’re unfamilar with your surroundings
  • moving to a new residence and the existing security system is not yet ready
  • recent changes in your environment for which you are currently not secured
• The App is not intended to be a permanent security solution or to replace conventional security solutions.

Limitations and restrictions

• We will not be held responsible for device or infrastructure malfunctions which prevent the App from functioning correctly, including but not limited to:
  • incorrect device placements
  • circumventing the App, whether deliberate or otherwise
  • battery discharges
  • proximity sensor failures
  • cellular or Wi-Fi network failures
  • OS or App “crashes”
• You agree that you are responsible for ensuring correct device placement, and for testing the placement in advance.
• You agree that you are responsible for ensuring that the email addresses used for silent alarms are correct, and for informing the recipients beforehand of what to do when they receive a silent alarm email.
• The name of your device, under Settings > General > About > Name, will be used in the subject line of silent alarm emails, and as such you agree that you are responsible for ensuring that this name is meaningful to the recipients.
• While we will make every reasonable attempt to ensure delivery of silent alarm emails, circumstances outside of our control may prevent us from doing so.
• We reserve the right to limit how many emails are sent for any single silent alarm event, and increase or decrease the limit as required. Currently, the limit is set to five (5), meaning the first five (5) email addresses you provide will be sent emails, the rest are ignored.
• We will abide by hourly and daily limits to how many emails can be sent as imposed by our infrastructure. Other than product launch and other high profile events where the peak demands might be extraordinary, the limits should be satisfactory for normal operation with thousands of concurrent App users.
• Should the hourly and/or daily limits be frequently exceeded, we will investigate increasing the capacity, but the timescale to implement these changes is at our discretion.

We will try to limit revisions to these terms to coincide when new versions of the App are launched, but we reserve the right to revise these terms at our discretion.
